Family therapy is a type of counseling that can help family members improve communication and resolve issues related to the impact of trauma. There maybe one person within the family unit affected by a traumatic event (rape, accident, etc) but the effects of this experience has created stress and strain within the family structure. Working together to develop an understanding of this difficulty could provide support to the victim.
In addition, an entire family structure can be impacted by trauma (death of loved ones, tragic accident etc), leading to an overall disruption of functioning to each member of the family. What can be more challenging is that each member of the family may present with a different symptoms, varied levels of coping, and different levels of understand each other.
